The Knife, The Needle

Description

The recording of her first album, The Knife, The Needle, was a healing process for Elanor Moss after two notable EPs, Citrus (2022) and Cosmic (2023). Disappointed by a period of overly dense sound experimentation, the artist chose to return to her contemporary folk roots, emphasizing slowness and introspection. Drawing on therapy and the use of a four-track tape recorder, she explored her family history and the complexity of human relationships. "Sarah Waiting in the Car" sets the tone, with Elanor's delicate and contemplative guitar playing and the subtle contributions from Matthew Herd's ensemble - Marcus Hamblett (horn), Jool Owen (horn), Andrew Stuart-Buttle (violin), Reid Jenkins (violin), Linus Fenton (double bass), and Herd (saxophone) - which embellish her lyrics with heartbreaking gravity, as the narrative shifts from a meeting in a bar to the consequences of an abusive relationship, with sweetness turning into violence. Through songs like "Fixer," Elanor examines how love can alternately hurt or heal, symbolically transforming the knife into a needle to stitch up wounds. After abandoning an initial version recorded in New York, she chose to re-record the entire work in the Scottish Highlands with producer Pete Miles. This risky choice allowed for a calmer, stranger, and typically English sound to emerge, revealing the full extent of her talent. Ultimately, The Knife, The Needle stands out as a work of great vulnerability where each shared wound transforms into luminous poetry carried by the artist's voice and guitar.
