Evil Does Not Exist is a new soundtrack by Eiko Ishibashi, which once again demonstrates her ability to convey the depths of the unspoken in her music. The fact that it is also the soundtrack for the new film by Ryusuke Hamaguchi is wonderful news for anyone who loved the one she wrote for his Oscar-winning 2021 film, Drive My Car. The way her music effortlessly harmonizes with the state of nature as depicted in the film, a nuanced story about the awkward efforts of humans to maintain coexistence with the delicate state of the planet, is another profound achievement. What is at stake here, however, is much more than just fantastic new music from a powerful new film - it is evidence of a vital recomposition of the relationship between sound and storytelling, and between the composer and the filmmaker. Eiko's compositions are written for violin, cello, guitar, drums, and keyboards. Her long-time partner, Jim O'Rourke, played guitar and mixed and mastered the recordings, achieving the necessary nuances of atmosphere and ambiance for the film.
