Compose music that is close to the skin, meta-sensual, music of eternal, infinite love, a love one feels at the heart of nature and of human art, without always understanding its sources. Play living music for the present but also for an unreachable “afterlife,” knead it, imagine it, summon it, celebrate it, embody ourselves as mediums, as messengers of these timeless chants, outside of time. Yet a music very real, physical, atmospheric, almost in levitation, with as its only tempo the complicity of intuition... Question everything again, put all the work back on the bench. Percussionist, drummer, composer, improviser, researcher and photographer. He began guitar at the age of eight, then learned trombone and classical percussion at the CNR in Rennes. After a master’s degree in musicology at the University of Rennes, he entered the IRCAM doctoral program in 1996, where he obtained a DEA. He entered the CNSM in Paris in 1998, earning a first prize in musical analysis. Classical, contemporary, jazz (student of Daniel Humair for 3 years at the CNSM), Indian music and then in Calcutta with Biplab Battacharia on tablas), non-European music and free improvisation deeply marked his playing as a percussionist. In 2001, he founded the European trio Das Kapital with Daniel Erdmann and Hasse Poulsen. For six years, they improvised without playing a single note from any repertoire. In 2009, they decided to pay a first tribute to composer Hanns Eisler with the album Ballads & Baricades and won the prize for best jazz record of the year 2011 in Germany: Preiss der deutsche Kritik. A second tribute volume to Eisler was released in 2012, Conflics & Conclusion. In 2013, Wim Wabbe asked the group Das Kapital to pay tribute to Hans Eisler with the Royal wind symphony orchestra Vooruit. The record received the Charles Cros Academy’s Coup de Coeur in 2016. In 2015, the group Das Kapital released the album Kind of Red on the prestigious French label: Label Bleu... Today, Edward Perraud has around sixty records to his credit on many labels around the world (Germany, USA, Portugal, England, Switzerland, etc.). He created his own label with Françoise Dupas in 2005 (Quark-records), which today has more than twenty releases. In 2011, he formed his group: “Synaesthetic Trip” with Benoit Delbecq, Bart Maris and Arnault Cuisinier, his first group as leader. A second opus of his quartet was released in 2015 with saxophonists Thomas de Pourquery and Daniel Erdmann as guests. Edward Perraud won (with Thomas de Pourquery and his orchestra Supersonic) as drummer and for his label Quarkrecords the jazz record of the year 2014 at the Victoires de la Musique with the album Play Sun Ra. In 2016, the film No Land's song by Ayat Najafi was released in theaters, in which, alongside singers Elise Caron, Jeanne Cherhal, Emel Mathlouthi, Edward Perraud plays himself. In documentary form, the film won numerous international awards and claims the right of women to sing as soloists before a mixed audience in Iran. In 2018, he became an associated artist of the Maison de la Culture d'Amiens and joined the prestigious French jazz label Label Bleu. There he released his first album in 2018, Espaces, with Bruno chevillon and Paul Lay, (an album awarded multiple distinctions: Coup de coeur from the Charles Cros Academy) and Télérama’s ffff, and album of the year for Jazzmagazine. A versatile artist, he has confronted his music with other disciplines: dance, theatre, cinema, circus arts... he is also a photographer and has been exhibiting for several years.
