With Pianoïd, Edouard Ferlet presents a new project that ventures into the crossroads of classical, electro, contemporary music and ambient. A natural evolution for this musician eager to build bridges between genres, from classical to jazz. If Bach has often been the pianist’s favorite playground, he now leaps across the centuries in a giant stride to place himself under the auspices of a tutelary figure such as Philip Glass. Edouard Ferlet thus takes us on a musical journey that is both poetic and technological. An exploration of the instrument that is the orchestra par excellence, where he delivers soundscapes of rich, dreamlike and deeply original substance. Pianoïd, a solo piano record then? Not quite. If this project is seemingly a dialogue between Edouard Ferlet and himself, it is also and above all an exchange between a man and a machine. By taking hold of the Diskclavier, an automated mechanical piano system, the musician plays with his virtual double. There are thus two pianos. One is in Edouard’s hands, the other is a machine. It is his reflection, his mechanical creature. This other Edouard is precise, rigorous, formal but also deviant and untimely. This tool makes it possible, in fact, to produce ways of playing that man cannot reach: a quantity of simultaneous notes, complex rhythms, speed of execution, greater nuances... Man, whose playing is amplified and multiplied, faces Machine, sometimes submissive or intelligent, always surprising. Far from a mere exercise in style, Pianoïd offers a vision of what a “solo piano” can be, whose musical language is enhanced by a virtual being.
