In this new album 'J'ai Traversé La Mer', Edmony Krater wanted to pay tribute to all those women and men who were uprooted from their native lands. Inseparable from Guadeloupean culture, Edmony Krater made gwoka the foundation of 'J'ai Traversé La Mer'. By recalling one of its ancestral functions, that of communication, he transformed the powerful percussion into a rhythmic magnet on which all the music that shaped and inspired him throughout his career as a musician came to cluster and gather. By intertwining them with one another, Edmony defined a modern and contemporary vision of gwo ka, far from any folklorization but strictly faithful to Guadeloupean identity. An identity he carries into coppery jazz notes or the sequenced loops of a drum machine. The gwo ka in the background, more or less assertive but always present, contained within the rails to ensure the backbone of a piece, a playmate with which the musicians organize wild solo races on which it unleashes its percussive storms. An identity with a strong militant spirit, which remembers the political and social turmoil of an island whose natural treasures are dying under chemical pollution. Which recalls the past and turns it into a driving force to move forward, rather than an endless subject of resentment. Bringing together two generations of musicians around him, Edmony Krater ensures this role of transmission that has always inhabited gwo ka music. A music which, with 'J'ai Traversé La Mer', has never looked so much toward its future.
