In Space

Description

After a nearly 20-year silence, Edith Frost is back, buzzing, with In Space. Her first new album since 2005’s It’s a Game is perfectly timed: the world needs Edith’s voice back in the conversation. During her years away, Edith immersed herself in music every day and spent a great deal of time learning—in addition to new lyrical perspectives, her reinvention as a keyboardist is one of the waves that elevate the In Space album. The keyboards have drawn out different levels of Edith’s harmonic palette; to those of us listening, this attenuation seems to create a deep focus on the emotional life of the songs and a breathtaking, visceral presence in the performances. Edith’s voice, in all its variations, also seems very fine and vital. Mark Greenberg, along with Rian Murphy, brought new arranging ideas to complement the strange, new vibe of Edith’s songs. Recorded at the Loft in Chicago, with invaluable contributions from Jim Becker (Califone, Air Blue Gowns), Sima Cunningham (Finom, formerly OHMME), Bill MacKay, and Jeff Ragsdale, In Space appears to be Edith Frost’s most fully realized album to date, awash in harmonized vocals and—more often than ever before—showcasing her own playing.
