Originally released on 03/02
To celebrate Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis's centenary, Craft Recordings is honoring his music with the sumptuous box set 'Cookin' with Jaws and the Queen: The Legendary Prestige Cookbook Albums'. This edition brings together the albums Cookbook, Vol. 1 (1958), Cookbook, Vol. 2 (1958), Cookbook, Vol. 3 (1960), and Smokin' (1964), originally released on Prestige Records and recorded by legendary sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder.
In 1958, tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis (also nicknamed "Jaws") and Shirley Scott, the virtuosic Hammond B-3 organist, met in a New Jersey studio to record their first collaboration. 'The Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis Cookbook, Vol.1', released in June, laid the foundations for a nascent genre: "soul jazz." The successful experiment was followed by three other equally essential albums from the duo.
