Dulce Pontes is part of this new generation of fado singers (Mísia, Cristina Branco, Bévinda...) who are bold and attempt to renew a genre somewhat frozen by the imposing presence of their "mother" figure, Amália Rodrigues. This album respects tradition (popular or personal themes) while also transgressing it, with vocalizations that one might think are derived from Bulgarian or even Arabic folklore. This originality gives the album a true identity and a renewed interest thanks to the excellent choice of repertoire. Pontes likes to say that fado is like a tree: it must have strong roots, but it also knows how to nurture its smaller branches that reach outward. Her decidedly modern approach certainly brings a real freshness to a genre sometimes preoccupied with the considerations of being a "guardian of the temple"...
