Cuts Across The Land is the debut album by the cult rock band Duke Spirit - Originally released on Loog Records in May 2005, it is a massive adrenaline rush, critically acclaimed, that solidified the band's success through word of mouth. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the album, the original album is paired with a new limited LP of B-sides and rarities from that era and is pressed on two 180g audiophile LPs: one on yellow vinyl and the other on red vinyl. The Duke Spirit was formed in London in 2003 by guitarist Luke Ford (guitar) and singer Liela Moss (vocals), who met at Cheltenham Art School. Joined by bassist Toby Butler and guitarist Dan Higgins after moving to London, their first EP, Roll, Spirit, Roll was released on City Rockers that same year. It received positive reviews, which ultimately led to a contract with Polydor through James Oldham's trendy label Loog Records. Cuts Across The Land was produced by former Cocteau Twin Simon Raymonde and U2 producer Flood, taking Moss's piercing vocals and Higgins and Ford's chiming guitars to create a dense and exciting sound. Featuring five singles, including the Top 30 UK hit "Lion Rip," the band delivered an exciting mix of post-punk and heavy rock, creating their own unique sound. The standout track of the album and scene favorite "Love Is A Unfamiliar Name" is typical of their approach.
