During a break from his current work as the leader of the post-punk duo Vague Lanes, Mike Cadoo returns to his long-standing project Dryft with Particle, his fifth full-length album under this name. Arriving twenty-six years after his first album Cell, Particle further refines the fractured electronics and muffled melodic language explored on From Stasis in 2021, presenting a set of sharper and more immediate compositions. Cadoo, also widely known as a founding member of the pioneering electronic project Gridlock, has used Dryft as a constant outlet for his electronic work for decades, connecting early post-industrial IDM to more contemporary and measured forms. Long recognized for his precarious time structures, with rhythms that seem to stretch, erode, and reassemble in real time, he approached Particle with a renewed interest in allowing these patterns to resolve completely. Melodic elements play a more direct role, actively driving momentum rather than remaining on the sidelines. Emphasizing clarity and immediacy, Particle prioritizes tactile sound design and upfront arrangements over density or abstraction. The result is a particularly focused Dryft release that serves as a comprehensive benchmark for Cadoo's electronic production to date, informed by decades of exploration while remaining resolutely forward-looking.
