In 1999, after a short period of obscurity following his departure from Death Row, Dr Dre had just reconnected with success by producing a few tracks from Eminem's debut album. But his main task remained to deliver a worthy successor to his solo album, "The Chronic," considered the absolute classic of gangsta rap. A delicate challenge that the former key member of NWA managed to accomplish. Surrounded by his protégés including Snoop and Eminem, he stripped his recognizable style even further by giving up his wicked synth sounds but remained true to a heavy and catchy funky sound. Packed with great tracks, "2001" is a new classic.
