LIVE FROM AUSTIN TEXAS/VINYLE VERT TRANSPARENT

Description

This is the first colored pressing of this performance. Doug Sahm, also known as Sir Doug, was both a legend and a pioneer of Texas rock and roll. Certainly, there were others before him (Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison come to mind), but the Sir Douglas Quintet countered the British invasion of the mid-1960s with their own brand of Chicano-influenced rock that they played in their hometown of San Antonio. Dressed in their tight-fitting English-style suits, they hit the charts with "She's About A Mover" in 1965, riding the waves with Doug's relentless guitar riffs and Augie Meyer's much-imitated Vox electric organ chords. This performance, recorded on October 14, 1975, took place after Doug had temporarily dropped the name Sir Douglas, but features original member Meyer along with musical companions Martin Steitle, John Barber, Steve McDaniels, and Harry Hess. All the classics of the Sir Douglas Quintet are there, including "She's About a Mover," "Mendocino," and "Rains Came," and Doug ventures into other musical territories ranging from T-Bone Walker to Bob Wills. Long before the quintet, Doug was making music even before the birth of rock & roll. He began his career as "Little Doug," a guitar prodigy who was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry when he was just 13 years old. Over time, with the help of his irrepressible personality, he became a voice for Texas music, the original "cosmic cowboy" at the height of the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin. But his influence extended beyond Texas; in 1973, he even drew Bob Dylan out of seclusion to record with him, and Bob in turn invited him to join his legendary Rolling Thunder Review Tour. Doug passed away suddenly in 1999, but he left behind a unique legacy, a "Groover's Paradise." - Terry Lickona (producer: Austin City Limits®)
