A key figure in Hard Bop, Donald Byrd cut his teeth alongside Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and accompanied some of the biggest names in Jazz, such as Max Roach, John Coltrane, and Sonny Rollins. It was in the early 70s that the trumpeter turned towards a Jazz sound that found its influences in a funkier groove. The release of this album in 1971 contributed to the lasting establishment of this Jazz with such a modern groove, and allowed many artists to follow suit.
