Originally released in 2000, American Don is the fourth album by the band for Touch and Go Records. The first album, For Respect, consisted of dense and menacing soundscapes that built structures as joyful as the Berlin Wall. It was followed by a second album, Don Caballero 2, equally solid. "Math rock," a term whose definition is not universally agreed upon, became a recognizable concept and word. The members of Don Caballero sought to avoid these markers and released their third album What Burns Never Returns, where the time signatures became increasingly difficult to follow and the form was more confusing. After redefining their sound in these more protean terms, there remained a hard rock thread that connected all the band's efforts to this day. American Don tainted their relationship with "heavy" as much as What Burns troubled the band's relationship with "math rock." Pressed on double purple vinyl.
