The melancholic universe of Patrick Modiano set to song by Dominique A!
Jean-François Mondot, a journalist and jazz critic, has long been a reader of Patrick Modiano, whose misty and nostalgic poetry he loves. In 2020, he set out on a bold undertaking: to translate Modiano’s fog into songs. He immersed himself in his novels and reread everything. Out of this immersion came thirteen songs very freely inspired by the writer’s world, linked together by a chronological thread. We follow, step by step, from childhood to maturity, a man who could be at times a dreamed-up Modiano, at times one of his characters. Jean-François Mondot sends his lyrics to Dominique A, whose supple, embodied voice has long moved him. He is very lucky: the singer is also a reader of Modiano. He decides not only to perform the words of this unknown writer, but to set them to music under his real name, Dominique Ané. To carry out this project, he surrounds himself with two major figures of French and European jazz, pianist Stephan Oliva and double bassist Sébastien Boisseau, two musicians who know the weight of words as much as that of notes. The eclectic drummer Sacha Toorop, with his incomparable finesse of touch, completes the team. The result is a unique musical project, eminently poetic and profound!
