For about 10 years, The Dirtbombs' singer has been threatening to release a bubblegum pop album. After mostly original releases, we thought the threat was just a recurring joke, but finally here it is: Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey! One might have expected an album of covers from bands like the 1910 Fruitgum Company or The Archies, but singer Mike Collins wrote 10 new songs that pay homage to the style popularized in the late 60s, early 70s. This Dirtbombs album is sweeter, more pop rock than previous ones, with hints of Josie & the Pussycats or even The Banana Splits, featuring childish themes and choruses galore. But the resemblance ends there, and with the multitude of guest musicians (unprecedented on a Dirtbombs album). While bubblegum music consisted of quick productions with studio musicians lined up and lyricists hired for the occasion, Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey is the result of an album constructed, worked on, and reworked for almost two years.
