For about 10 years now, the singer of the Dirtbombs has been threatening to release a Bubblegum pop album. After mostly original releases, we thought the threat was just a recurring joke, but here it is at last: Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey! One might have expected an album of covers of groups such as 1910 Fruitgum Company or the Archies, but singer Mike Collins has written 10 new songs that pay tribute to the style popularized in the late 60s and early 70s. This Dirtbombs record is sweeter, more pop rock than the previous ones, with hints of Josie & the Pussycats or the Banana Splits, with childlike themes and choruses galore. But the resemblance ends there, as does the multitude of guest musicians (unprecedented on a Dirtbombs album). While bubble gum music consisted of a hastily produced record with studio musicians lined up in a row and lyricists hired for the occasion, Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey is the result of an album built, worked on, and reworked for almost two years.
