Between stints in prison and technical unemployment, the fifties were not very glorious for saxophonist Dexter Gordon, a living god of the saxophone just a few years earlier. His salvation comes from the Blue Note label, which allows him to record a handful of very beautiful albums in the early sixties – and we are not just talking about the covers here. Go! is the last American album in the series, before Dexter Gordon moved to Europe. Dexter Gordon does not revolutionize jazz with this album, but he presents it in its most magnetic and accessible light. The breath of Dexter Gordon flows through his instrument as if to make the ambient air more breathable. The sound is ample, the melodic phrases well constructed. There is sometimes something Coltrane-like in his thoughtful playing. Coltrane adored Gordon in his youth, and the admiration proves to be mutual.
