The live album that all devoted Devo fans have been waiting for, Nitrous Nightmare bears witness to the band’s artistic greatness in its purest form. This mythical concert captures Devo perfecting some of its most iconic concepts in all their spontaneity. Expertly restored, this live recording delivers an intense experience and reveals a Devo capable of provoking controversy. On Halloween night in 1975, Devo took to the stage at Cleveland’s WHK Auditorium, opening for the legendary Sun Ra, before a wild crowd dressed in the finest Halloween clichés. Already under the influence of nitrous oxide and alcohol provided by the sponsoring radio station, this oblivious audience expected to see a flawless cover band run through Bad Company hits. Instead, they were confronted with a subversive artistic performance that would send the already exasperated crowd into a rage. Physical threats were hurled, but Devo kept playing. This live record, the perfect companion to Futurismo’s much-acclaimed “Art Devo,” presents the tracklist that illustrates the origins of de-evolution theory in concert. These tracks would go on to become among their most famous, and this recording is considered the very first performance of “Jocko Homo” before an audience. The full 12-minute version, available here, will delight fans, even if it displeased the urban hippies and masked spectators present that night. The music played that evening would go on to transform culture for decades, long after the spectators in the room had put away their cheap vampire costumes and returned to their lives. This double vinyl, made up of unreleased live tracks, most of which have never been heard before, is a masterful performance drawing directly from this foundational history. Mixed and mastered directly from recordings preserved in the band’s personal archives, this live box set shows why Devo was, and remains, one of the most important bands in American history.
