Hardcore by DEVO documents the band's beginnings as pre-punk outsiders in the fertile underground rock scene of Akron, Ohio. DEVO was formed as a conceptual art project armed with the radical philosophy of de-evolution. Recorded on various four-track machines and in tiny studios, basements, and garages between 1974 and 1977, Hardcore reveals their very clear vision: a rock 'n' roll stripped of its collective freshness and reduced to propaganda suited for the post-modern man. It is not surprising that these transmissions quickly caught the attention and ear of Brian Eno, who would later produce their iconic 1978 debut album. Noisy synths, choked guitars, and primitive rhythms are the foundation of DEVO's early sound. Hardcore Vol. 2 digs deeper into the band's cranial bunker with the hit "Be Stiff," the space age surf-blues "Clockout," and even a manic version of bubblegum pop, "Goo Goo Itch." This double vinyl box set includes four unreleased tracks: "Man from the Past," "Doghouse Doghouse," "Hubert House," and "Shimmy Shake."
