Black Aura My Sun is the debut album by Matthew Doty, aka Deserta, originally released in 2020. This first batch of floating and illuminated tracks began to take shape in 2017. Shortly after learning he was going to be a father, he started working on songs inspired by the joy and unknown of the new world opening up to him. This inspiration is the sonic and emotional backbone of his debut album. Like a hot air balloon heading straight for the stratosphere, Deserta reveals another facet of songwriting that Doty has spent decades refining. As experimental as it is exciting, Black Aura My Sun applies the vaporous production values and sublime dynamics of Doty's previous band projects (notably the post-rock group Saxon Shore and the synthesized post-punk of Midnight Faces) to a shoegaze sound that bridges the gap between Slowdive and Sigur Rós. The album is a baptism by fire that was written, recorded, and mixed in total solitude. It expands and contracts, with chords drifting like clouds, drums trailing off and dissipating, and hooks lingering in the air for what feels like an eternity. That said, Black Aura My Sun is not a subtle or soft record. It makes quite a racket and is particularly intense when played through a good pair of headphones. Deserta is Doty's main creative outlet at the moment and a one-way ticket to a whole other dimension.
