Are you ready to experience the definitive death metal album? Deicide's self-titled debut album from 1990 is not only one of the best-selling releases in the genre (if it's not #1, it's in the top three); it is also a stunning philosophical and artistic statement. "Uncompromising" is certainly the appropriate term, though it is a euphemism, to describe its stance on organized religion, which includes not only Christianity but also Charles Manson ("God's Creation Lunatic") and Jim Jones ("Carnage in the Temple of the Damned"). But it is "Sacrificial Suicide" and "Dead by Dawn," which references the film Evil Dead for perhaps the slightest hint of lightness in what is a very dark album, that have become stone-cold classics. The ferocity of the lyrics is matched, if not surpassed, by the musical assault, with the piercing twin guitars of brothers Eric and Brian Hoffman, and the malevolent exhortations of bassist/vocalist Glen Benton. The true hero – or anti-hero – of the band, however, may well be drummer Steve Asheim, whose double bass "blastbeat" barrages defy comprehension.
