Love is an everyday magic. That's the impression given by Water, the new album from Chicago trio Dehd. Hailing from the city's ever-growing DIY scene, Jason Balla (Ne-Hi, Earring), Emily Kempf (Vail, ex-Lala Lala), and drummer Eric McGrady share a strange and inexplicable chemistry. Their music, hazy and drenched in reverb, revisits the raw, nervous surf rock characteristic of the Midwest. It’s propelled by the euphoric momentum of The Velvet Underground's Loaded, the light melodicity of C86-era indie rock, and a hint of The Cramps' dark groove, energized by McGrady's "locomotive" drumming. Water offers a lucid look at the chaotic nature of daily life, wrapped in sweet melodies and grainy textures. More than anything, the album embodies Dehd’s founding motto: as Kempf puts it, "working with what you have and making something magical."
