In *A Peace of Us*, a trio of indie music veterans — Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips (from Galaxie 500 and Luna) and Sonic Boom (from Spacemen 3 and Spectrum) — create a unique Christmas album that blends various genres such as 60s pop, garage, country, Christmas carols, and electronica. The album captures the complexity of the holiday season, evoking a mix of emotions, including joy, nostalgia, sorrow, and frustration, as Dean explains. This project naturally emerged from their covers of Christmas songs and a special show during the pandemic. The melancholic tone of the album is illustrated by tracks like "Snow is Falling in Manhattan," an emotional song by David Berman that Dean sees as a future Christmas classic, and "Pretty Paper" by Willie Nelson, reimagined with an electro-pulsing duet between Britta and Sonic Boom. The trio also reinvents the classic "Peace on Earth / Little Drummer Boy," inspired by Marlene Dietrich's version, where their voices blend for a poignant plea for peace.
