There’s an old cliché about the last day of summer vacation: they say it embodies access to infinite, effortless joy. But in reality, that’s not it at all. Just ask Payson Power, the guitarist and creative soul behind the Toronto band Daydream Plus. “Growing up, every time I saw a movie set on the last day of summer, I’d think, ‘We’re already at the depressing part!’ The best moment is the second-to-last day of summer, because it’s the last day you can live without consequences.” That moment, when you can still watch movies and play video games until sunrise, inspired Power to write Daydream Plus’s first full-length album, Second Last Day of Summer. What makes that day so beautiful is that, unconsciously, you know everything is about to end. After spending his life playing heavy music, Power founded Daydream Plus in 2020 to explore melodic and catchy compositions, letting himself be carried by influences he had only been able to access in fragments. After two EPs where the Toronto trio moved within the narrow overlap between complex math rock and urban city pop, Power slowly broadened his horizon. Drawing inspiration from video game soundtracks, energetic anime music, and even chords lifted straight from the Steely Dan repertoire, Second Last Day of Summer sees Daydream Plus building a more richly detailed universe. Aided by his bandmates from Tomb Mold, drummer Max Klebanoff and bassist Kevin Sia, the trio strives to recapture the spirit of Don Caballero and add a touch of smooth jazz.
