David Huckfelt is a folk singer, songwriter, and activist whose poetic sensibility and spiritually unwavering songs have earned him a cult following in the darker corners, far from the frenzied roar of the music industry. Hailing from Iowa and a former theology student, Huckfelt attended the prestigious Iowa Writers Workshop before abandoning his academic and theoretical pursuits to dedicate himself to songwriting and performing. With a mastery of improvisation and a stubborn insistence on staying present with his audience, Huckfelt's folk performances have garnered him a loyal following, ranging from small-town opera houses and theaters to national stages like Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, the Edmonton and Calgary Folk Fests, and the legendary main room of First Avenue. Sharing the stage with a diverse array of artists such as Mavis Staples, Bon Iver, Emmylou Harris, Arcade Fire, Calexico, Gregory Alan Isakov, Iris Dement, and many others, Huckfelt's roots run deep as a folk singer grounded in the tradition of interpreting songs by other artists. An initial meeting and collaboration with the legendary Native American poet John Trudell allowed Huckfelt, as a friend and ally, to connect with a multitude of Indigenous artists and activists, including Keith Secola, Louise Erdrich, Winona LaDuke, Quiltman, and many more. He has also served as musical director and performer at the Music + Resistance festival "Water Is Life" in Duluth, MN, and his songs appear in the new AMC television series "Dark Winds," produced by Robert Redford & George R.R. Martin. As a founding leader of the Minneapolis indie-folk cult The Pines, with roots in the same Midwest soil that produced legendary folk singers like John Prine and Greg Brown, David's new solo work maintains a robust optimism that cuts through layers of darkness in real time with songs that are poignant, sweet, and clear.
