"Austrian Syndicate"... the expression immediately brings to mind the most famous and influential of Austrians in the field of jazz, Joe Zawinul. However, David Helbock's project is much more than a simple tribute to his compatriot. It is a return to the roots of jazz fusion.
It is a return to the roots of jazz fusion and its evolution, but also a new stylistic direction for Helbock, who has managed to draw on a range of inspirations with a refreshing openness to new sounds from all over. As Helbock himself says: "It is close to my heart."
In the spirit of Zawinul, a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards and a giant of jazz fusion, David Helbock performs here for the first time solely on keyboards, leaving the piano to Peter Madsen. "Practically everything I know about music and jazz, he taught me," says David Helbock about his former teacher and mentor. A true hero of the piano, but little known outside specialist circles, Madsen toured the world with Stan Getz starting in 1987, and has since played with many other great names in jazz: Benny Golson, Joe Lovano, and Don Cherry, as well as funk: Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker.
