"Austrian Syndicate"... the phrase immediately brings to mind the best-known and most influential Austrian in jazz, Joe Zawinul. However, David Helbock's project is much more than a simple tribute to his compatriot. It is a return to the roots of jazz fusion and its evolution, but also a new stylistic direction for Helbock, who has drawn on a wide range of inspirations with a refreshing openness to new sounds from all over the world. As Helbock himself says: "This is something close to my heart."
In the spirit of Zawinul, a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards and a jazz fusion giant, David Helbock performs here for the first time exclusively on keyboards, leaving the piano to Peter Madsen. "Practically everything I know about music and jazz, he taught me," says David Helbock about his former teacher and mentor. A true piano hero, yet little known outside specialist circles, Madsen toured the world with Stan Getz starting in 1987, and has since played with many other jazz greats: Benny Golson, Joe Lovano, and Don Cherry, as well as funk legends: Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker.
