The album is defined by David Gray's intuitive approach, exploring new electronic textures and sonic palettes, as well as new production techniques. Using a new approach to song arrangement, atmospheric and experimental nuances are evident throughout the album. Speaking about the creation of Gold In A Brass Age, Gray says: "With this album, I wanted to do everything differently. I wanted to move away from narrative. Instead of writing melodies, I looked for phrases with a natural cadence, so that the rhythm starts with the words. I imagined where a song could come from and what form it could take." The passage of time is a recurring theme throughout the album: "Fragility, renewal, a change of perspective," in Gray's words.
