March 7, 2025, marks the 50th anniversary of the release of YOUNG AMERICANS, David Bowie's ninth studio album. On the day of this anniversary, YOUNG AMERICANS will be reissued as a limited edition 50th-anniversary remastered half-speed vinyl. On this album, David Bowie once again expanded his musical horizons by embracing "plastic soul," which would give him his first number-one single in the United States, "FAME," co-written with John Lennon and Carlos Alomar, then Bowie's guitarist. This album was partly influenced by the "Philly Sound" and was recorded in Philadelphia at Sigma Sound Studios during a break in the DIAMOND DOGS tour, with a band including the faithful Mike Garson on keyboards, as well as the late Luther Vandross on vocals and David Sanborn on saxophone. During the sessions produced by Tony Visconti at Sigma Sound, David Bowie delved into soul music and created a new alter-ego, The Gouster, a slang term for a stylish ghetto inhabitant.
