Available as a 6x10” vinyl box set, TOY (TOY:BOX) is a special edition of the TOY album. The idea of "capturing the moment" inherent in the recording sessions extends to Bowie's cover illustration, which features a photo of him as a baby with a contemporary face. The packaging also includes a 16-page full-color book featuring never-before-seen photographs by Frank Ockenfels 3.
TOY was recorded immediately after David Bowie's triumphant performance at Glastonbury in 2000. Bowie entered the studio with his band, composed of Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Mike Garson, Holly Palmer, and Emm Gryner, to record new interpretations of songs he had recorded between 1964 and 1971. David Bowie had planned to record the album "the old-fashioned way" by recording the band live in the studio, choosing the best takes, and releasing it as soon as possible. Unfortunately, in 2001, the concept of a "surprise" album release and the technology to ensure such a launch were still far from perfected, making it impossible to release TOY instantly, as David Bowie had wished. In the meantime, Bowie did what he did best: moved on to something new, with a handful of new songs from the same sessions that would eventually form the HEATHEN album, released in 2002 and now recognized as one of the highlights of his career.
Twenty years after its originally planned release, David Bowie's co-producer Mark Plati states: "Toy is a time capsule captured in an atmosphere of joy, fire, and energy, with the sound of happy musicians playing. David revisited and re-examined his work from previous decades through the prisms of experience and a new perspective – a parallel that did not escape me as I revisit it twenty years later. From time to time, he used to say 'Mark, this is our album' – I think he knew I was very deeply involved with him on this journey. I am happy to finally say that it now belongs to all of us."
