Because he sensed the changing wind better than anyone, David Bowie decided to leave glam and England behind in the mid-1970s. As a passport to America, he concocted almost single-handedly (without his Spiders From Mars, reduced to only pianist Mike Garson) a curious, deranged rock album of astonishing richness. Since the Orwell family denied him the rights to make a musical of "1984", Bowie invented this concept album on steroids, in which he adopted some of Orwellian themes for himself.
