The Californian pianist Dave Brubeck is one of the stars of jazz in the fifties. He was even, in 1954, the second musician of the genre to grace the cover of Time magazine, five years after Louis Armstrong. Time Out is his most famous album, the one with the hits "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," whose melodic patterns have touched a much wider audience than that of jazz for decades. And for good reason: it’s jazz that steps aside. With his quartet, Dave Brubeck wanted to explore other rhythmic grammars than those of jazz. His pieces then sound like elegant seduction numbers between the ways of jazz and other traditions, whether they come from classical music or distant countries. Purists find the result heretical or easy, but the public and time vindicate Dave Brubeck's musical vision, innovative without being obscure.
