The fact that Time Out became such a resounding success took the world by surprise, including the members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. In 1959, the group, with Paul Desmond, had been around for nearly a decade and enjoyed great popularity among jazz audiences. Most of the tracks were composed by Brubeck, as is the case with the album Time Out.
However, one of the most catchy tracks on this album, "Take Five," was a composition by Paul Desmond and would become the quartet's most famous piece. Although they had experimented, in one way or another, on many of their previous albums, none of them had a concept as ambitious as Time Out, which featured only tracks written in unusual time signatures. It was impossible to predict that such an unusual idea would give birth to one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time.
