'Music For A New Century' is a portrait of composition in the postmodern era. This quartet of pieces was commissioned or co-commissioned by the New Century Chamber Orchestra and reflects its full commitment to new works. This commitment has been further strengthened under the direction of Daniel Hope. Recorded at the Bing Concert Hall at Stanford University, the album features four compositions, including Philip Glass's third piano concerto, premiered on the West Coast of the United States by the ensemble in 2018, here performed by Ukrainian pianist Alexey Botvinov. The other three works are presented as world premieres: • 'Lament' by Mark Anthony Turnage for solo violin and strings • Double Concerto by Tan Dun for violin, piano, percussion, and strings, for which Botvinov joins Hope and New Century once again. • A brand new composition by Jake Heggie, written specifically to mark the anniversary year of the ensemble. Between them, these emotionally eloquent works cover a wide range of ideas and musical styles; together, they summarize New Century's action in favor of contemporary classical music. Their shared passion for excellence, innovation, and exploration results in this stunning new recording for Deutsche Grammophon made as part of the ensemble's 30th anniversary celebrations.
