Cradled by the songs of the islands and rebetika, nourished by jazz, folk, and a subtle electro touch, carried by virtuosic instrumentalists and diverse repertoires, the pure and haunting voice of DAFNÉ KRITHARAS celebrates exile, love, and joy. Here she draws from a melting pot of traditions that have converged and coexisted for four centuries under the Ottoman Empire: Greek, Sephardic, Bosnian, Armenian, Turkish songs, etc. Varka, her second album, brings together musicians from various backgrounds and breathes new life into these sometimes forgotten ancient songs. The singer also reveals some of her own compositions in Greek: true stories transformed into mysterious tales where wronged women become formidable queens of the peaks and where the roaring sea comes to the aid of the oppressed. In January 2021, she was the recipient of the local music award – the Diaspora Music Awards.
