Drawing on their Guyanese and Jamaican roots, the band fused reggae basslines, afro-tinged nyabinghi percussion, touches of psychedelic rock, and American-style funk instrumentation to create a unique sound they dubbed "Nyah-rock."“Promised Heights” was recorded after the band’s US tour with Al Green, which firmly embedded Cymande in the ears of an adoring American audience. Cymande were also the first British band to play Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater.
