Recently hailed by Down Beat magazine as "one of the most visionary musicians of the new wave," Craig Taborn indeed offers a very personal approach to musical creation. Just as Avenging Angel managed to defy all expectations in terms of improvised piano solos, this new album Chants provides a fresh look at the great tradition of the piano/bass/drums trio. The tracks on the album composed by Taborn over the eight years of the group's existence were specifically designed based on the musical qualities of bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Gerald Cleaver in order to generate a truly innovative orchestral dynamic. Hence this exciting and complex music, constantly shaped by contradictory forces, shifting from density to fluidity with a true sense of drama.
