Air Between Us

Description

Coral Grief, the Seattle rock trio, and *Air Between Us*, their debut album, are aptly named. The opening guitar notes from Sam Fason on the track “Starboard” hit like a refreshing gust of sea air to the face. Within seconds, we find ourselves soaring both beneath the sky and above the sea. It's in this liminal space that Coral Grief thrives, constructing intricate webs of double meanings through this ode and elegy to their city and community. To bring this album to life, the trio settled into The Unknown, a former deconsecrated church converted into a sail loft and recording studio in Anacortes, Washington. Working with engineer Nich Wilbur, this workspace became their workshop. Vocalist and bassist Lena Farr-Morrissey and Fason share a psychic alchemy that can only be unlocked by playing together for years. Drummer Cam Hancock’s dynamic playing is a bridge of ideas that propels their songs into new territories without boasting. Together, they draw inspiration from Stereolab, Broadcast, Th’ Faith Healers, and Seefeel, rethinking that very particular strain of British cool with a Pacific Northwest twist.
