They say you have your whole life to make your first album… How did they manage to condense it into just 37 minutes?
The album treats rock music with irreverence and a complete lack of seriousness. Combining works in progress from the band's primary songwriters, bassist Greg Burns and guitarist Jamie Chellar, with some drafts dating back several years before the band's inception, all members of congratulations joined forces to refine and flesh out these songs with energetic performances and arrangements brimming with ideas and colors.
Leah Stanhope's impressive vocal performances can switch in a flash from angelic to infernal, while James Gillingham on drums combines extreme finesse with devastating power. Cheeky pop melodies clash with Jamie's shredded guitars, Greg's thick fuzz bass rumble, crunchy electronic beats, and a motley mix of distorted synths and samples, relatively new to the band's sonic palette. These muscular songs take control of the band and deliberately drive it towards abrupt tangents (the explosive saxophone invasion in Nevagunna, the broken ending of This Life, the Bollywood excursion of Bubbles).
With songwriting spanning several years, the bulk of the recording was completed in a single week to capture the rhythm and immediacy of the band's enthusiastically received live performances. Then began a long process of refinement, with producer Luke Phillips (Icebeing) joining in to add power and punch to the recordings and finish mixing the album, all topped off with a big green/blue/red/yellow (your choice) bow.
