Deutsche Grammophon had to end this year of the Verdi bicentennial in style. Grandioso therefore offers in 7CD an incredible kaleidoscope of over a hundred years of great Verdi recordings, from the creator of Othello, Francesco Tamagno, captured in 1903, to Pavarotti's first 45 RPM for Decca in 1964, not to mention the great Caruso. While Italian singers take the lion's share here, this sumptuous box set also honors the foreign stars who have left their mark on the Verdi art, such as Grace Bumbry or Fischer-Dieskau. The best conductors in this repertoire are also not forgotten, particularly Ferenc Fricsay whose legendary public recording of the Requiem, made in 1960, is reproduced here in its entirety. A complete analysis by the great specialist Richard Osborne adds an extra touch to this reference anthology that every Verdi lover must own.
