Charles Baudelaire allows for a musical journey that begins with Beethoven and ends with Serge Gainsbourg and his lineage. Universal Classics France dedicates a beautiful book-disc to him that brings together for the first time the music that inspired the poet and those based on his poems. CD1 presents Baudelaire the music lover, through a selection of works by Beethoven, Liszt, Weber, Chopin, culminating in Wagner, his supreme revelation. CD2 brings together the great composers of French melody who have appropriated Baudelaire, setting his poems to music: Chabrier, Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Caplet, as well as Dutilleux and the Austrian Alban Berg. Specialists will be pleased with an unreleased CD version of "Five Poems" by C. Baudelaire by Claude Debussy (with Colette Herzog and Jacques Février). CD3 finally provides a nice overview of the place reserved for the poet in French song. It is Léo Ferré in particular who proved that Baudelaire could fit into all music and made him popular. A lesson taken up by Serge Gainsbourg but also Yves Montand, Catherine Sauvage, or Juliette. The music intertwines with poems and other texts by Charles Baudelaire read by actress Irène Jacob.
