The third time was the charm for Cold, as album #3 reached #3 on the charts. Singer Scooter Ward has always been (and still is) the band's greatest asset, so the shift of Year of the Spider in a more melodic direction worked both artistically and commercially, even allowing them to score a hit single ("Stupid Girl," co-written with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer). But upon closer listening, the emotional depth and vulnerability of Ward's lyrics really set Cold apart from its grunge and nu-metal contemporaries.
