Description
Cold in Berlin announces their fifth album, Wounds, their most eclectic and ambitious work to date. Wounds is the long-awaited fifth album from the band, their first in six years. As heavy as it is haunting, this record brilliantly blends doom, post-punk, and driving krautrock into a dynamic and hypnotic whirlwind, propelling the most exciting cult London band into intoxicating new territories. The first single, "Hangman's Daughter," leads the way. Opening with a hypnotic techno bassline, the track quickly gives way to post-punk guitars, powerful choruses, and singer Maya's magnetic narration. Wounds was recorded by Mike Bew, in the studio at Foel Studio. The band worked late into the darkest hours, experimenting with new sounds and filling the valleys with acrid sonic wails, blasting from amplifiers borrowed from My Bloody Valentine. "There's something mystical about the Welsh countryside," says guitarist Adam. We recorded in a deep, dark valley, under the mist and shooting stars at night. We could wander through the surrounding woods and stone circles during breaks. Foel Studios are integrated into this setting with their own transcendence; their rich history includes sessions with Electric Wizard, Hawkwind, and The Fall. The album's synths are arranged by Bow Church, an influential figure in Berlin's dark electronica scene and a long-time collaborator of the band. His work weaves icy, atmospheric textures into the tracks, creating a complexity that demands repeated listens. The synth-driven track "They Reign" captures the band comfortably nestled between Kate Bush and Neu! Meticulously crafted, Wounds captures the visceral energy of Cold's celebrated Berlin concerts. The album's arrangements and raw sound remain true to the relentless intensity and atmosphere of their live performances: each track retains the sweat, urgency, and immediacy of a band playing in the moment. With free jazz brass sections on the bold punk rock track "12 Crosses," off-kilter structures on the blackened track "I Will Wait," the poetic finale "Wicked Wounds," and soaring synths on the electro doom of "The Stranger," Wounds is the band's most ambitious album to date.
