During the transition period in which the main members of Coil (Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson and John Balance) reorganized their group by incorporating Drew McDowall, Coil took a radical turn towards the metaphysical unknown. The band chose to filter its identity through the war name Black Light District, setting a precedent for their future exploration of the worlds beyond. Recorded during the winter of 1995/96, Black Light District relies more on the avant-garde formal research and academic interests of the group than on its industrial pedigree. Conceptually abstract, Black Light District shows that the old guard of Coil disregards the pop rhythms of previous albums and fully embraces its experimental electronic trajectory.
