After Allumettes au Bout des Îles, an EP released in 2022 on Hidden Bay Records, the Parisian post-twee pop quintet Cœur-joie is releasing its true debut album Les réminiscences on Howlin' Banana. United by their love for Cate le Bon, Tim Presley, Deerhunter, Stereolab, as well as Brigitte Fontaine, Alain Bashung, and Anne Sylvestre, the five musicians have been exploring the possible encounters and intersections between Anglo-Saxon indie pop and French chanson for three years now. At its core, it seems simple. One should never give in to ease, but allow for effectiveness. Never wallow in the obvious, but also not snub catchy melodies. Well, that’s exactly what Cœur Joie offers. The acrobatic quintet constantly veers off course. Their playful pop takes us to unexpected places, releases catchy hooks, blurs the lines, halts in its momentum, pretends to fall, catches itself on the alliterations of the lyrics, sets off again, and gets lost once more. In a sensible world, such detours should lead the group to the top. And why not? At Cœur Joie, nothing is impossible.
