In 2019, for Halloween, the pillars of experimental rap from Los Angeles, Clipping, released a horrorcore-inspired album titled There Existed an Addiction to Blood, after three years of silence. This year, rapper Daveed Diggs and producers Jonathan Snipes and William Hutson return with Visions of Bodies Being Burned. This new studio album tells sixteen new stories that are even more frightening, in the form of inspired and militant horrorcore trips, incorporating influences from Ernest Dickerson, Clive Barker, and Shirley Jackson, as well as from Three 6 Mafia, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Brotha Lynch Hung. The California trio commands respect with their angular and fragmented interpretations of existing musical styles. Clipping reinterprets horrorcore, a deliberately absurd subgenre of hip-hop that emerged in the 1990s, in the same way that Jordan Peele approaches horror cinema: by subverting the most beloved themes to make explicit their radical vision of monstrosity, fear, and the strange. The album features a plethora of collaborators: Cam & China from Inglewood, noise rap pioneers Ho99o9, guitar genius Jeff Parker from the band Tortoise, and experimental drummer Ted Byrnes from Los Angeles. Unquestionably committed, the group perseveres and dedicates the track "Chapter 319" to George Floyd (aka Big Floyd), the former rapper affiliated with DJ Screw who was murdered by police in May 2020, or reinterprets a text by Yoko Ono from 1953 on "Secret Piece" to close this high-flying fourth album.
