After the acclaimed "Rose In The Dark" released in 2020, the year of her 30th birthday, Londoner Cleo Sol delivers "Mother," a second album of twelve equally magnificent tracks on Forever Living (the label of SAULT). Reconciling the lessons from her mother, her experiences, and what she wants to pass on to her child, that is the spirit of the album. The cover shows Cleopatra Nikolic nurturing in intimacy, under a portrait, it seems, of her mother. Her stage name, Sol, also echoes her mother's half-Spanish heritage.
With smooth melodies in the spirit of the 1970s, mid-tempo soul, gently embracing gospel (Build me up) and enriched with strings, the sound of the album is timeless. The orchestration of the track Music, reminiscent of a classic like Les fleurs, brings Cleo Sol even closer to a Minnie Ripperton. Here is a new gem crafted by Inflo, who is acquiring the dimension of producer of the year, considering the nearly simultaneous album releases from the Sault collective and rapper Little Simz.
