Sandrine Piau and David Kadouch come together for a program that the French soprano has conceived as the second part of a diptych that began with Voyage intime (Alpha 911). This time, we enter the world of childhood, but even though this album is called Contes, "these are not children's tales," says David Kadouch. Sandrine Piau continues: "popular tales and legends often play an initiatory role and serve as little providential pebbles guiding us through the forest of our intimate and ancestral fears." With their well-known and recognized expertise, Piau and Kadouch bring together composers from different languages and worlds—Hahn, Debussy, Ravel, Wolf, Strauss, Zemlinsky, Poulenc, Shostakovich... and introduce us to very interesting female composers such as Jeanne Bernard (1895-1965), Wally Karnevo (1914-2015), Louise Didier (1872-1955), and Ilse Weber (1903-1944).
