Description

A long-time friend of the label and former student of Stones Throw, "Rejoicer," teams up with a long-time collaborator, a comrade, a member of the band Apifera and renowned pianist Nitai Hershkovits, and will present a new name and conceptual piece, "Cinéma Royal." Having already collaborated for Raw Tapes and beyond, this body of work exists on the modern classical plain with splices of ambient and jazz woven into the musical fabric of the compositions. Led by the piano, the album presents a dizzying array of orchestral, percussive, and traditional string instruments from around the world — perfectly combined in a way that could seem artificial, yet fits effortlessly. The fact that it is such an easy listen distracts from its complexity. Synthesizers lean into indebted Afrobeat, drums, East Asian zithers swim among classical strings, arrangements with Ethio-jazz touches dance on top, irresistibly funky drum machine patterns. Inspired to create a cinematic energy in which they saw the essence of Fellini, their choice of album cover, striving to create an album that could exist as film music.
