In his new album Sun Glories, Chuck Johnson, a musician, composer, and producer based in Oakland, California, explores the themes of time, memory, and illusion through his unique blend of pedal steel, synthesizers, organs, strings, and percussion. The evocative fields of guitars and pedal steel conspire to trigger an intoxicating palimpsest of memories, before being propelled forward by the improvisational and driving performance of Ryan Jewell on drums, and by the radiant glissandi of electro-acoustic saxophonist Cole Pulice. The album also features contributions from cellist Clarice Jensen (with whom Johnson has worked on film scores) and violinist Emily Packard, both of whom layered multiple parts to create a virtual chamber ensemble.
